10 Questions with Jerry Damage

Jerry chats with the league's newest board member, Khell!

Welcome to 10 Questions with Jerry Damage. This is a weekly player interview to get to know some of the players and personalities around the league better than just someone who’s name we’ve seen on the website. For this first interview, we start off with the one of the leagues newer players, Khell.

Standard opening question here: Where are you from originally? And where are you at now?
Khell: I was born in the state of New York, moved to Maine when I was 2. When I graduated high school I moved back to New York for about a year, then moved to Kansas for a year. Ended up moving back to Maine 7 years ago and have been here ever since.


Other than playing Hearthstone, what do you usually do to have some fun or relax?
Khell: I enjoy reading, the Dragonlance series of books being my favorites. I also play a fair amount of Xbox.


What’s your history with CCGs? Is HS your first?
Khell: Hearthstone is not my first, I played Magic semi-competitively and won a couple of GPT’s back during the Return to Ravnica block but ended up getting out of magic as it was just too expensive to keep up with.


How long have you been playing Hearthstone?
Khell: I’ve been playing hearthstone since the week before NAXX was released. NAXX OUT!


Last season was your first season, what brought you to THL?
Khell: My team captain Jammies is also a mod for Next Level Hearthstone, he and Donde would talk about THL in the Next Level server so they ended up getting me into it. Very happy they did too, THL has a great group of people and it’s been a lot of fun.


You played in Sylvanas but between LHS and Conquest, which format do you prefer?
Khell: I’ve always preferred LHS, though I think conquest is easier to get into. I’m also still learning the ins and outs of LHS (as my record will show :)).


You run the Ask HS discord. Can you tell us more about that and how you got started with it?
Khell: Oh jeez I could talk about this for hours lol. So when I first signed up for discord I joined a server called pauper hearthstone. (Pauper being a format where only commons and basics are legal) I played with the pauper guys for a few months and someone mentioned askHS in the server (honestly I don’t remember who it was) so I jumped in to check it out. AskHS was structured a bit differently back then but I immediately fell in love with the community there. It was such a positive place where anyone could go to ask any hearthstone related questions and get the help they needed without being made fun of or ridiculed for asking “dumb” questions. Back then the server was a bit smaller, sitting at around 2200 members or so. (The server is currently sitting at 3500) askHS is what really fueled my passion for HS, and for being a part of a positive community that tries to give back. I tried to become a teacher pretty early on, unsuccessfully I might add. I still have screenshots from the day Tueri originally asked me to join The Council (askHS’s team of admins or our “board” if you will.) I was so stoked to be a bigger part of the server. Fast forward I want to say 6 months or so Tueri decided to step down as the “owner” and passed the mantle to me. And so here we are! I could go on and on about the friendships I’ve made there but don’t want to ramble. But TLDR: that server has fueled my passion for hearthstone and it’s community, and lead me to many friendships I’d never thought I’d have to this day.


What are your goals for the future in Hearthstone and THL?
Khell: My goal in THL currently is to continue improving my play and record I the league itself. Next season I intend to field a team for both Rag and Sylv for AskHearthstone. So be on the lookout, we’ll certainly be a force to be reckoned with!


If you could add any card from Wild back into Standard, which card would you pick and why?
Khell: Hm this is tough. I’ve always loved dragons, and my two favorite decks were always freeze mage and dragon priest, so I think I’d bring back Drakonid OP. Though I think it would push priest a little over the top in the current meta, also SECRET AGENT COMING THROUGH. (Ed. note: This interview was conducted in the previous meta)

If you could pick 1 card from Hearthstone to represent you as a player, what would you pick and why?
Khell: I’m pretty predictable in that I’m mostly a control player. So I guess I’d say Dr. Boom. Because just like hearing that inevitable laugh on turn 7, you can be sure my lineup is probably control oriented.
